Lisbon was founded about 3.000 years ago and the Phoenicians, its first inhabitants, would be followed by different peoples that conquered, lived in, developed and enlarged the original “calm bay”. Come with us and learn about this historical and social process while discovering its most important landmarks until the first king of Portugal conquered the Moorish city with the help from the Crusaders, almost nine-hundred years ago. Then, we move westward to discover a “different city” and the stone witnesses of the 15C and 16C Portuguese maritime expansion carried out by navigators, and backed by a team of passionate human beings as diverse as geographers, cartographers, mathematicians, princes, kings… and a science in permanent evolution they all contributed to. Have the privilege of discovering where most of these expeditions started and finished, in those days.

With the arrival of Italian Music (sacred and profane), at the invitation of the Portuguese court, in the first half of the 18th century, Lisbon became the destination not only for musicians-instrumentalists, singers and composers, but also for architects, decorators and painters-scenographers from the Italian Peninsula. Many of these ended up leaving works the 1755 earthquake did not completely destroy or were executed afterwards and still remain. On the other hand, the devotion King John V had for the Catholic Church, Rome and the papacy, and the passion his son and successor Joseph had for the Opera, notably contributed to make the connection to that part of Europe even more intense and lasting. On this cultural tour, we will dive into the Italian Lisbon from the 18th and 19th centuries and enjoy the greatest icons of this great influence in Rossio, Bairro Alto, Chiado and Belém.

RIVERSIDE DISCOVERY

Lisbon, the city of light, as poets, writers, musicians and other artists (including photographers!) refer to it, would not be the same without the river Tagus lazily flowing wide in front of it, on the way to the Atlantic Ocean. Come with us and discover the Portuguese capital from a different perspective, as it slowly unfolds in front of our eyes, during a short but comprehensive river cruise. Then, during the walking tour in the historical and monumental Belém district, get immersed in the memories and the atmosphere of the city from the time our kings ruled a navigator-built empire that encompassed territories in four different continents and three oceans. And, have the privilege of interacting with these heroes, while feasting your eyes with and visit the stone witnesses of those days.
